I have been watching the news for the last couple of weeks now and seeing banks and other businesses worldwide closing down because of the credit crunch then I hear that eBay is losing money and has to get rid of staff to try and stay alive Shocked this could be why they have increase their fees and change their policy can somebody please tell me the truth about eBay as I know the press can sometimes lie and make things look more serious than they are. Surprised

Hi Rob,

My own opinion is that no it's not closing down - just trying to maximise
profits in difficult times for all companies.

HTH

Cheers

eBay seem to be changing direction by offering lower rates to some huge companies to list end of range and overstocked items. This is likely to drive away more smaller sellers who cannot compete. Already there has been a noticeable flow of sellers from the site to alternatives, though whether they will succeed elsewhere remains to be seen as people generally are buying less as energy fuel mortgages etc continue to go up in cost.

It may be that the changes at eBay require less staff. But the company remains huge and is spread across the world, so it seems extremely unlikely it will disappear, particularly as a lot of its income comes from its very successful PayPal subsidiary. Much more likely, and it's just a guess, is that the company is now much more vulnerable to a take over bid. Having said that, who though would want to take over a company that has a business model that is probably now in decline?

I suppose the most surprising thing (to me) is that given eBay, the giant of all online auction sites, is finding things more difficult, there are still dozens and dozens of hopefuls starting up new "eBay alternatives" as this forum and several others make clear! Now, in the middle of a major recession, could hardly be a worse time to start up an eBay alternative. Sellers fleeing eBay will want somewhere with some kind of track record of sales success. This is why most of them are landing on places like eBid, specialist auctions, tazbar, delcampe and a very few others & their equivalents in other countries. And buyers, if they can be persuaded to look elsewhere (which is very difficult) want choice and a range of items which means sites which offer tens or hundreds of thousands of items, not a few hundred, or in many cases a few dozen! I doubt eBay will close,it will turn into a version of Amazon. After starting out and building catering for the small sellers of hard to find bargains it is turniong into a dumping ground for mass produced tat.The sad thing is that it shows no loyalty to its previous customers and seems insted to be deliberately alienating the vast majority of them.Maybe eBid and the other auctions can take up the challenge but it seems as though so far no one has really taken up the eBay mantle, time will tell though.
